In a surprise move, the 33 council chairmen in Oyo State have unanimously decided to dump the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) following the Supreme Court's judgment granting financial autonomy to local governments across the country.
The chairmen, in a communique signed by all 33 members, declared their unalloyed support for Governor Seyi Makinde, attributing their decision to his exemplary leadership and unrivaled achievements since assuming office.
According to the communique, the council chairmen have pledged their loyalty to Governor Makinde, citing his commitment to the welfare and development of the state as the reason for their defection from ALGON.
In a statement, ALGON's Public Relations Officer in the state, Ibrahim Akintayo, described the chairmen's stand as a show of solidarity with Governor Makinde's recent stance on local government autonomy, as ruled by the apex court.
The council chairmen have also asked the federal government to pay their allocation to the joint account operated with the state government, rather than directly to the local government council as directed by the supreme court in granting local government autonomy.
